How to choose between available ant colonies

Check the product title and species description and profile to see whether the offer includes only a queen, a young colony with a few workers, or a more established colony with workers and brood. Also consider how large the colony may become and whether your setup can be expanded as it grows.

What must be prepared before delivery?

Have suitable housing, water, food, escape protection and the required climate ready before ordering. A small colony should generally not be transferred into a much larger nest than it currently needs

Continue with the right setup

After selecting a species, browse suitable antfarms and nests or a coordinated ant starter kit.

Ants for Beginners and Experienced Ant Keepers

For beginners, we recommend ants of husbandry class 1 (HK 1), such as Lasius niger ants which are generally considered robust in ant keeping. Ant species in husbandry class 2 (HK 2) are possibly more sensitive to climate conditions and stress. Husbandry class 3 (HK 3) is only recommended for very experienced ant keepers.

The risk classes (RK) indicate potential hazards associated with a species. For beginners, we also recommend species in risk class 1 (RK 1). Possible risks may include stings, damage to buildings or impacts on ecosystems.
