For beginners we recommend ants of husbandry class 1 (HK 1) such as Lasius niger, which are very robust. Ant species in HK 2 are more sensitive to climate conditions and stress. HK 3 is only recommended for very experienced ant keepers.

The risk classes (RK) indicate potential hazards. For beginners we also recommend RK 1. Possible risks may include stings, damage to buildings or impacts on ecosystems.
