How to choose formicarium components

Formicarium components are used to connect, extend, ventilate, close or secure modular ant-keeping systems. The correct part depends on the product series, opening diameter, tubing dimensions and intended function.

Before selecting a component, check:

• Opening diameter: The connector, plug or grid must match the relevant opening or port.
• Tube dimensions: Tube and pipe dimensions: Check the dimensions specified for the relevant product. Tube connectors and pipe connectors may use different reference measurements.
• Product fit: Components that appear similar may not fit every formicarium series.
• System design: Check that plugs, grids and connectors correspond to the openings and components used in the existing setup.
• Purpose: Determine whether the part is needed for connecting, closing, ventilating, expanding or escape protection.
• Future expansion: A modular setup should leave practical options for adding further arenas or nests.

Use the measurements in the product descriptions rather than selecting components only by appearance.

Formicarium connectors and basin links

Formicarium connectors are used to connect arenas, farms, nests and other modular elements. They may join two fixed openings directly or provide a transition between the formicarium and flexible tubing.

The connector must fit securely and should not leave gaps through which ants can escape. Before ordering, compare:

• the opening diameter;
• the connector dimensions;
• the compatible tubing size;
• the product series;
• the direction and angle of the connection.

Rigid pipes and connection components provide a fixed alternative to flexible tubing in suitable systems.

Rigid parts may be useful where:

• a fixed direction is required;
• the connection must remain straight;
• a more permanent modular connection is required;
• flexible tubing could bend or move excessively.

Check the exact dimensions carefully, as rigid pipes and connection parts must match the required openings and connectors correctly.

Ventilation grids and inserts

Ventilation grids allow air exchange while preventing ants from escaping through openings.

The suitable grid depends on:

• the size of the ant species;
• the diameter of the opening;
• the required ventilation level;
• the cover or formicarium model;
• the material and mesh size.

A grid that is too coarse may not secure very small ants. A grid that restricts airflow excessively may also affect humidity and condensation.

Plugs and closure components

Plugs are used to close unused openings safely. They are important when a formicarium contains additional ports that are not yet connected to another module.

A suitable plug should:

• match the opening diameter;
• sit firmly without damaging the glass or acrylic;
• resist pressure from the colony;
• be easy to remove when the system is expanded;
• leave no escape gap.

Check unused openings regularly, especially after maintenance or expansion work.

Foils and visual nest covers

Red foils and nest covers can reduce light entering transparent nest chambers and support more natural nest behaviour.

Red or darkened viewing covers may allow the nest to be observed with less disturbance, depending on the product and species.

Foils should not obstruct ventilation, hydration access or important inspection areas.

Escape-protection components

Depending on the setup, escape protection may involve barriers, closures, grids or other suitable components designed to keep ants securely inside the formicarium.

The correct solution depends on:

• the ant species;
• the arena design;
• the lid and ventilation system;
• the room temperature;
• the condition and cleanliness of the barrier surface.

No single escape-protection product is suitable for every setup. Follow the individual product instructions and inspect the system regularly.

Expanding a modular formicarium

Modular systems can be extended with additional arenas, nests or farms as the colony grows. Expansion normally requires compatible connectors, tubing, plugs and ventilation components.

Before expanding:

• confirm that the new module is suitable for the existing setup and the requirements of the selected species;
• check all connection diameters;
• prepare and secure the new module before opening the existing system;
• avoid leaving temporary gaps during installation;
• test the connections before allowing the ants access.
