Help to the newbie

Another question: I have this water jelly stuff:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... r-gel.html
Can I use it at my lasius colony in this antfarm:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... x20cm.html ?
If yes, should I mix it with the soil when creating their world? I mean does it make the soil damp or it'sjust good for drinking?

Hi there,
Im pretty sure you use this instead of Water... But not 100% sure.
I would def not mix it with soil tho.
Just a quick question what soil are you using?
And have you put your ants to hibernate ?

The aqua crystals are instead of water to drink for the ants, not to make the soil (sand) moist. As for as i know.

I put my colony into the larder in a testtube, about 10 Celsius degrees. Now the queen (Aretha) does not move and about 8-9 of the 10 workers are still and 1-2 of them are walking pretty slow. So after two weeks they finaly are hibernated :). I check the testtube every third day whether everything's OK. Next week I will move them nito the fridge.
My ant farm is still empty, I haven't put the soil in yet, I have 200 grams of this soil:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... -200g.html
and 800 grams of this:
http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... -200g.html
My plan is to have an ant farm like this:
is it ok? Any changes necessary? If it's OK, I'm gonna put them in after they woke up in the spring.

Yep, I think I'd go without the basin part, I'll have just the glass display part. Hopefully that'll be OK for the Lasius niger colony. Anyway, it's a lot better than AntWorks... :)

u shuld at least have somthing attached that u can use for feeding, its allot easier to clean out without having to open the actual nest and have ur ants running off around ur house ;)

Hm, when you colony grows its a little bit less space in the farm. So i give you the suggestion that you should use a basin with the farm.

hmmm... Probably I'll think it over... problem is that I don't really have that much space for a basin, because I can only put my farm onto a shelf. I have a ferret who can climb up everything that is lower than 75 cm, which means he owns all the room :) little dictator :) and I'll also have to re-think the feeding part. Any idea how can I manage feeding if I don't have a basin?

u culd use a Jam Jar if you dont have much space, connected with a bit of Aquarium Air Tubing :) remeber to seal up the jamm jar well tho, pref with a bit of Aquarium safe silicon sealant (defently not household silicon!!)

Yeah, dont understand that jam jar too
But the basin you need for a Lasius niger colony is so little (20x10x10)

no lol an empty one, make a whole in the lid, then u can feed a tube into it and connnect it to the farm :) then drop food into the jam jar when u need to feed them, and to clean, juz rinse under a tap :D
