The first watering must take some time, usually a few days. But after that it is extremally easy, simply pour some water near, and it will soak like soil or sand. Don't add too much, it's best to keep ca. half of the nest dry, ants need also some dry place.
I use mostly cork nests and now I can say it's not necessary to cut corridors at all, because ants can make their own as they like. Of course they will use existing rooms first, so less chambers you make, earlier they will start digging, with colony growth.
