I have continued to offer these ants food, and honey, the solid food is untouched and I have not seen them at all. Obviously I cannot tell if they are drinking honey at night, it is possible but seems unlikely.
After about 6 weeks of inactivity, (following their crazy behaviour, fighting and death) I thought it was time to have a look, so I disrupted the nest.
Well turns out you guys were right. The ants were about 6 inches under the loam and became hostile.
There are 6 remaining workers (So 10 must have died), the queen seems fine and there is a small brood.
While they were out I got them to eat some sugar water, then they quickly covered the nest back up, and overnight they moved back into the connecting tube. This is actually better as I wanted to remove them from the loam anyway. So I decided to put the tube into a basin and find them some wood to nest in instead.
This was a few days ago, and I can see the ants now, it just amazes me that they have not eaten for nearly 2 months. They have blocked the tube again now and seem to be inactive again.
