I think my Camponotus ligniperda are dead

Beitragvon kashmir79 » 2. Jul 2008 21:55

hold on are they in Soil/sand. because ligniperda only live in rotten dead wood hence the name ' Carpenter ants'.

you can have them in a y-tong too. i keep mine in a y-tong. also remember most ants are nocturnal.

i hope is well with them.

I know wood is ideal but my understanding is they can live in soil/sand nests aswell. The antshop page says they can too.

I have found an LIgniperda nest under a stone once, the nest was in soil.

(By the way, does anyone know how long it takes for ligniperda to go from newborn white to normal color)

My ligniperda were never completely white, they're mid section (the red bit) would be white for a few days, but the head and gaster would start out black.

ok so I waited like 3 weeks and no above ground activity, I put some pieces of meal worm and flies there, but they weren't touched. Do you guys suggest I keep waiting a bit more or should I poke around?

I have continued to offer these ants food, and honey, the solid food is untouched and I have not seen them at all. Obviously I cannot tell if they are drinking honey at night, it is possible but seems unlikely.

After about 6 weeks of inactivity, (following their crazy behaviour, fighting and death) I thought it was time to have a look, so I disrupted the nest.

Well turns out you guys were right. The ants were about 6 inches under the loam and became hostile.
There are 6 remaining workers (So 10 must have died), the queen seems fine and there is a small brood.

While they were out I got them to eat some sugar water, then they quickly covered the nest back up, and overnight they moved back into the connecting tube. This is actually better as I wanted to remove them from the loam anyway. So I decided to put the tube into a basin and find them some wood to nest in instead.

This was a few days ago, and I can see the ants now, it just amazes me that they have not eaten for nearly 2 months. They have blocked the tube again now and seem to be inactive again.

I'm glad they are still alive. These ants grow really slow and when a colony is that small they are inactive most of the time. Maybe you can heat the farm up a bit, to see what they do. Don't heat it up to much.
