Myrmica ruginodis/Manica rubida

Beitragvon KiamCameron » 18. Mai 2008 15:40

Ok I have some colonies of either these two and because I am quite sure these are not Myrmica rubra as I got told the queens are identical these queens are different and easy to tell apart even if you have just one queen and no workers you can tell and I saw a Manica rubida photo of queen and it looked like it im going to measure these ants soon and see how big they get...

Can anyone post Myrmica ruginodis photos with queens and Manica rubida?

And do Manica rubida and Myrmica ruginodis live in rotten wood as this is where I found these colonies in a big log...

And are Manica rubida in England or very rare here? or not here at all?

Thanks
Hope you can help me find out which species these are
I cannot get pictures I can but you wont be able to really tell that much... But If you want I will try put them on...

Manica rubida don't live in England. Manica queen is ca. 12mm long, workers are 7-10mm, so it is much larger than any Myrmica. Myrmica ruginodis is one of the larger Myrmicas, so it's possible you have this one. Yes, it can live in dead wood (while Manica live only in sunny, sandy places)

yes maybe , but I dont know about it , they live at 800m + , so ... , and it is a lot of more size than Myrmica rubra ;) , workers are big 8-10mm and myrmica only 3-4,5 max ... so I think it is impossible to make mistake to research diferrents btw Myrmica and Manica rubida

I measured a dead worker of this species and it was 5-6mm long and I will try measure a live one as it will be more detailed and can tell easier

Don't think it is Manica rubida.
As a told you before. It would surprise me very much if they would live in England. :)

hey!
If the ant have two relatively long spines at the rear of the thorax it is probably Myrmica ruginodis ,if there is no spine at all it is a Manica.
