Seen about 3 Niger queens walking around with still their wings on, so have left them. Shouldnt be long now. does it seem a bit too windy today for them to fly?

oh bugga. Well here it was drizzly most of the day yesterday. The two nests in my pond section still have queens in the openings to their nest and i havent seen any large wingless queens running around yet. Which part of sunny England are you from?

yep am waiting...n waiting...n waiting...lol

I'm using 150mm x 16mm test tubes, doesnt matter to much how big they are, long as they are at least 10mm in diamter, if they are to short to have about 10ml of water, get yourself a long needle n syringe, then you can top the water up :) (just do it slowly so you allow the pressure change to slow down)

i live in berkshire, i havent seen any flying around yet. although i just went to my shed to check on my m.rubras and saw loads of ants and winged queens. i didnt even know they where there under the slab of the patio i stepped on, hundreds of ants came out and about 10 winged ants.

maybe there more sensitive when they have winged ants in the nest and i disturbed them? maybe tomorrow round here they will leave the nest. i have been working in portsmouth for a few days and looked about there and didnt see any either.

Shame, ive been waiting for the flights but I havent seen any this year :( I have a lasius niger ant nest in the garden and the other day it appeared that they were readying to fly but then it started raining :( usually we'll see the flights twice a year but seems we will be lucky with once this year.
But its good weather today so who knows.

I live in Dewsbury, near huddersfield in west Yorkshire and here it seems all ant nests are in hibernation... I havnt seen any ants in the 2 main nests outside my house (one is lasius niger and other Myrmica Rubra)
but the only ants ive seen are in my garden but they are very small, only consist of 12 workers or so. Lets hope they will fly sooner or later

fingers crossed. I got my first starter kit from germany last week with M. rubra consisting of a queen and about 7 workers. Ive never come across rubras in the Uk myself. Id be well interested if anybody gets some queens around the Reading/Oxford area. Had a niger queen land on one of my staff about half an hour ago. well sunny here @ the moment.

Well considering we haven't had a sequence of more than about 12 hours sunshine in what, 5 weeks now? It's hardly suprising!

(<<-- I'm over in Huddersfield :P)

... and we have more severe weather warnings for Sunday & Monday too, for heavy rain. It's relentless.

If we ever get a week or two of good "Summer weather", hopefully the mating flights should start then.
