Good point.

"Why would you want to keep ants in such an ill-suited and ludicrous setup? The ineptness of the "antworks" gel formicary is a well established fact. While the "antworld" itself might make an adequate nest, if you manage to solve the humidity problem, amongst others, it is still lacking an arena for the ants to forage."

Ok thats a fair point, i'll dismantle it and let the Ants free tonight. I really am interested in keeping Ants long-term though, and as someone who loves animals, their well-being is the most important factor to me!!. Thanks for your comments, and I agree, it wasnt the most ideal set-up. Antworks has turned out to be rubbish but its made me more interested in keeping Ants properly. I'll post on these forums for any further help.

Thanks!!

Why would you want to keep ants in such an ill-suited and ludicrous setup? The ineptness of the "antworks" gel formicary is a well established fact. While the "antworld" itself might make an adequate nest, if you manage to solve the humidity problem, amongst others, it is still lacking an arena for the ants to forage.

As for the ants you are currently detaining in your setup: Set them free! Whether or not you will eventually keep a whole colony is of no concern to their fate. Different colonies will not accept them, and most likely kill them. Let them go and return to their own colony.

If you want to keep a real colony, and before you try and create a new, more suited setup, ask yourself if you are really into ants. Some people seem to think ants are toys, created for the amusement of their owners. Those people are wrong. Ants can be boring. Mind-numbing boring. It takes a colony month and years to grow. And, in contrast to what some may believe, ants can be suprisingly lazy, if they are well fed. But if you are the kind of person that would find joy in breeding orchids, ants might be for you.

If you still want to be an ant keeper, browse this board for informations on how to start a new colony.

Hi im no expert with ants but i think that the antworks deffinetly right to keep ants in. But for the antworld i think it is an alright place. Even if it is to small you can add another one on or a tunnel to a feeding area.

The "antworld" is not all bad, but it has some disadvantages.

- No easy way of keeping the nest humid. Ants need a certain level of humidity.
- No simple solution for keeping the nest dark. Ant nests need to be dark.
- No arena, although you can easiy solve this by placing the "antworld" into a tank.
- No proper documentation. It's a toy, nothing more.

There are far more professional alternatives available, including cheap do-it-yourself nests.

All quite wrong. The nest is easily kept moist by adding 2 pipes from the top of the sand to the bottom, and then drop some water down - sand will keep moisture for a "moment"

And ants - they get used to the light in few days/weeks, so that's not a problem.

Arena can be easily added to those ´connection´ thingies at the sides.

And why antworld is only a toy? It is as good ant nest as any other formicarium.

umm.

What are you all have with these AntWorlds.... I don´t know ,I think It is not for ants like to have or make colony ,IT IS ONLY TO VIEW LIKE ANTS BUILDING NESTS. For normal antfarmering you must use classic ytong nest or some specifics nest. I don´t want to insult this item or somebody ,but I mean , this is for kids....

Thanks Skippy

It is not for kids aswell. It can have a queen ant it says queens are acceptable in the antworld and it comes with a dish thing which I guess you call arena and you can put things in there and they climb down the tube and get the food ;)

That's the point. You have to add pipes yourself and connect the whole thing to a seperate arena. It's just not well suited for long term ant keeping, if you buy it as is. If you go solely by its documentation, you will be unable to provide the needed environment for successful long term ant keeping. Hence the term "toy".

By the way while it is absolutely possible to keep ants 24/7 in broad daylight, its a far cry from responsible animal husbandry, and it does lead to misbehavior by the ants, and possibly to a less than healthy colony. They will get "used" to it due to lack of alternative, but its not good for them. An increase in brood being carried around is just one of the more obvious effects of this treatment.
