I'm not really sure how many was in there... but as long as you have a queen and a few workers it doesn't really matter. The number of workers will go up fast.
and they can also hide so that you cant see all of the nest my colony is in a 3 foot by 1 foot ex fish tank which has plnety of room for my lasius niger colony. Sithmaster676
For the next year I also plan to keep a Lasius niger colony in an ant display. The only reason for this is to observe how will they dig "underground" and what shape will be the nest.
no im sure i wont get bored having an old fish tank ant farm is great because i have a place for them to live and a arena built in one. but i am planning to get an ant display aswell so i can view a new colony at work which will be interesting to watch.
does anyone use a ytong for there colonies?

does it work out well for you?
and i just would like to ask a quick question. next year when my colony of lasius niger come out of hibernation after a few weeks i was wondering if it would be a good idea to add some lasius niger pupai from another well populated nest to my colony to add to its population
Sithmaster676
Yes it does.
You can do that, but there is a small change they don't except the pupai, normally they do but it can be that they just eat them.
Some people i now do it, but i don't see way. Lasius niger crows very fast.
