Hi darradar, first of all congratulations on your colony, it is beautiful.

I'm new in the forum and I am thinking of beggining a colony for this ants. I see you don't use any moisture methods in yours and use a heater.

I'm from Portugal and the winter is warmer here. Also the temperature is higher all year round and with less humidity. I also live in a very warm apartment, I only turn on my heating for a month or so every year.

So, do you guys think I need to moisture the nest, even if it is in low quantity, or there's no need for that?

Do I need a heating pad?

Hello Jazz,
welcome to the forum,
I think that you should always keep plenty of water avaialble for this spec, I have two open bowls with cotton wool in, I think the open bowls allow a little humidity in the foroging area, but no I do not moisture the actual nest, and as u see in my case the colony prefer it.
As to if u should provide extra heat I would say yes maybe just in one small corner of the nest, but as too your warm winters, you need to pay attention to the fact the ants need to hibernate, and can only do so if the temperatures drop, mine go into the loft where it drops between -1-3degrees,
The ants tolorate this for at least 5mnths, end of sept to March, the queen needs this time to rest and recover from a hectic year of egg laying, so u need to think about how you can let your colony sleep as it grows in numbers....

Where I live, yesterday and today the temperature is 20 to 25ºC (in the morning). The coldest we get in the winter is around 5ºC, and that is very cold to us. I live next to the sea, so the temperatures are warmer. The only way to put them on that kind of cold is in the refrigerator (I don't think my girlfriend will like this option ).

This week I'll start to build my formicarium and then ask for help in the forum.

Small nest, slice of mealworm (so they can access the flesh) and for small colonies do not disturb the nest much, the queen may eat her eggs/larvae. Hope this helps!!

She still keeps eating her brood. Even if I do not disturb her for 2 weeks.

I have two queens and both keep eating their brood.
Both have only have one worker.

Well I don't know what you are doing wrong. Mine has two pupae, one large larva, a ton of eggs and some freshly hatched infant larvae. Post a pic.

Hello everyone. It’s been years right, yeah I know..... sadly I lost my queen some years back, and then the colony slowly died off.... it’s been so long I hardly recall the events.... it was such a blow, I couldn’t face starting from scratch.....

But my enthusiasm to start again in the hobby sparked, after watching my own vids on my YouTube page.....

I’m waiting for a Messor Barbarus red headed queen and brood with a few workers to arrive.... The notion of them harvesting seeds fascinates me, yeah I know they are somewhat ‘commonly’ kept, but......

I’m excited muchly.

So it seems I’ve gone full circle and got myself another Cruentatus Queen with eggs and brood...
I have also on the way a Camponotus Turkestanus queen who arrives next week...
I shall begin a journal on that spec when she’s here...
meanwhile I’ve familiarised myself with my own diary here so here are some pix of my CC Queen to start my second colony off....

wow i gave them the honey, and one of the workers emeidietly fed some to the queen, i find it just fascinating, how they tend to her.... i'l try sort some picks.
I decided not to attach the antfarm part, as im gonna fix up a ytong at the weekend, and there really doesnt look like there's enough room inside the antfarm for the queen to turn around, I guess they will be happy in the small arena for a week or so, till i sort a more permanant home.
So you suggested adding more water, i shall do that first thing in the morning, i thought they had water at the other side of the test tube.?
And yes, i do love them already, i think more than any other of my tarantula's, they are sure to become my favourite.
From what i have manged to work out on the foriegn web sights, that have a translation option, it seems like these particular species, do not seem to like damp areas within there nest. As the web sightsHyperlinks sind nur für registrierte Nutzer sichtbar are in german, and you have become most frindly, i wanderd if you could take a look for me, i simlpy typed Camponotus cruentatus in the search engine and up they popped, lots of references, mostly in german....
