hello ive tried this antsore jelly, its great (espially 4 my rubra colony) this a great food source for them, but it starts going moldey after a few days. best to give to a colony that is not to small otherwise they dont really eat much and starts to go all moldey, so i find its best for bigger colony's :) but its more clean giveing colony's this i find because al u have to do is poke the tweezers in when it goes off and put in the bin(good, easy and relible 9/10 as it does go off like i said) :D

i tend not to make my own, i prefer to buy alreay made its easyier and mum dont moan at me for useing da eggs, and stuff lol and i dont get in the way of the kitcen so its all good

lol not a prob.......u cook spiders? what fry them/stick them in the oven ,your proper grusome mate!!!..............lol dont u mean put them in a cup of hot boiling water or something like that, and that's grusome enough lol without cooking them up :-s

depends on size of colony and which species they are, but i normally give my ants live food as i believe they should kill some food at least like what they do in da wild. i also find intresting to watch aswell lol. but watching insects is better than watching them eat ant jelly, lol even though its a great food source for most ants :thumright:

lol just the boiling water.. its still too new a colony to be puttin in live insects yet.. Maybe next yr.. N its just a Lasius Niger Colony :)

I do admit tho i cant wait till they are big and i can watch them kill there own food.. it will be very interesting.

Yeah my Polyrhachis dives love that stuff. But when you put a whole cup in it gets hard and moldy. So only put in some parts and the rest in the fridge.

Steve, the ant jelly at the top of this post is the stuff i use to feed new queens :) i've noticed tho that only some of the colonies that have come from the queens like it, which is strange, coz the Queens love it (however you can buy it from pet shops in the UK, find a good reptile pet shop and look for the Reptile Protien Jellys)

worht getting tho :)

I use a mixture of diffrent insects, thats the key, a varied diet, because there are a miriad of diffrent things ants need to grow healthly, amino acids, protiens, vitamins, fats etc

I feed my ants...

Ant Jelly
Locusts
Crickets
Spiders
Moths (not the ones with allot of fur on the body, ants dont like them)
meal worms (not giant ones, they have been given growth hormones!!)
beetles

Once i have killed the insect in boiling water, i dust them with powdered fish flakes, for extra vitamins

and of course Honey, Nector (expensive tho) and Sugar water (i use Fructose to make sugar water)

oh right that explains it!!!

steve uk 28: hi there i use a vary of foods for my ants, really whatever's avalible or what i get my hands on first/what i buy from anstore. i normally get a lot of my foods from my back garden, under plant pots and rocks/wood/leaves/plants these sort of places will be your best
bet :) but ants generally eat nearly everything u give them. watch out 4 some insects they fight ants back!!!!! acshely i normaly use woodlice, because theres lots of them, very common,(round where i live) dont fight back but some species may have trouble killing them!!!

i tend not to use spiders because its not good for slower species because there to fast to kill/or to strong for them etc

this long anouth antsore please dont delete it [-o<

wot u mean good long contributions? :tssk:

lol thanks guys an much appreciated Miszt.. got my dremel through today so ive started cuttin my block :D will post some pics once im done n u can rate it... Prob a 1 out of 10 lol.. But i shall try.. Im gonna have a seperate basin for them to get food from tho...
Actually I got a Q about that too..
Once i made it.. sealed it an all that.. Im guessin im gonna put the test tube with the colony in into the Basin.. and let them move out on there own.. Now.. last time i did this the ants made there nest in the basin... lol how can i stop them this time.. Perhaps by not puttin any sand loam in there ?? if i dont.. what can i put in there that they wont nest in??
Ok and this is now my longest post LOL ;)

i'd recomend u use a chissel tbh, a wood chisel is fine, its allot quicker, then finish off with the dremel

leave the basin completly empty, so they have no where to nest, and then they will find the ytong :D
