Young Colony what it need?Lasius niger

Beitragvon maxfly » 24. Aug 2006 18:22

Finally, colony arrives today, (Thanks antstore for service!)apparently all healthy, 5-6 workers some larvas and queen, im set up the basin whit clay, loam-sand mix and tube for humidity, im place the test tube in the center of the basin, and i cover whit some clay gemmas for darkin it, also I place dish whit wet spunge.
After few minutes, 2-3 workers give some loam near outside the ttube and get it inside. Some times the workers explore the area bit far and looks phrenetic what searchin? Food? or other material for made nest?
What food is best at this time honey-mix whit water and flour biscuits?
Is sand-mix loam is sufficient? or other material is needed?

-update-

I put some butter-sugar mix, because i have not honey tonight, but apparently they are not interested, i think they search good place to dig, for made a nest in loam, but they dont find it, what can I do?

Thanks for any suggest

Sincerly

Max

Hi maxfly!

Such a small colony doesn't need much. You won't even relize, if the where pickin up something.
But i think you really should offer them a mix of honey/water or at least suger/water. For proteins i would offer a dead fly or bug. If you can bye some feeding animals i would suggest meal-worms or small house crickets.
If i understod correctly, you alredy offerd water.
Carrying sand/loam in the testing tube is just natural. The want to reduce the opening.

Mfg Felix

small colonies prefer to work at night because they are less visible for there enemy's than (in the wild) they feel saver that way.

....Truly that stupid that i am.....!! at this time...colony after 3-4 days of max activity, they eat one spider, two mosquitos, and one silver fishy, and completely reduce the opening of the Ttube, they rest. Is already one day and half, that they not exit of the nest, I was give a another spider, but it grown mouldy and i leave it. I have captured some cricket and i freeze it for when activty will going.

Thanks
