I'm going to order some ants that need to be kept at 24-28c. I was planning to use a heat mat but I dont really have enough money to afford a thermostat. Would it be necesarry to have one with them. I will have a thermomiter in the tank so could I not use a thermostat? Or to be slightly safer I could use a heat lamp as I could control it better. Any one got any suggestions as I am really confused! Thanks!!!:D
That is true, it is always better to have a thermostat. If i was you i would go for the heat mat. If you need about 26°c you need a strong heat lamp to have that temperature at this moment and it will dry out the air to much. You could use both to, the heat mat to heat up the nest area and a low heat lamp to heat up the out world.
My "thermostat" is basicaly some paper towel and a thermometer: I adjust the thickness of the paper towel barrier between the nest and the heat mat, using the thermometer to check temp, untill the temp is right in the nest . No problems yet.
you need to take into account the tempreture fluctations in your house, which can vary massivly, if your house temp goes up 2-4C, u culd easily be cooking your ants, without any control, and vice vesa, u culd be 'freezing' them, if they are tropical
