i was just thinking about how ants are amazing predators and will kill anything they can catch, that led me to a thought, what if ants were a bit bigger ,say 70mm or 80mm,would they cause massive problems for humans and could they have stopped us from being top of the food ladder? An ant that big with a large colony would prove to be a massive problem, surley nothing would be safe ???????????????????????

its often over looked, because we dont tend to think of ourselves as part of the animal kingdom, but humans are the most ferocious predetors this world has ever seen, i dont think we'd have any problem dealing with giant ants, unless they where as intelligent, or more intelligent than us

no problem dealing with giant ants, i strongly disergree they we be loads of the massive things everywhere it would be a living breaving nightmare its all ready exremly bad with the fire ants species if they were any bigger...... the trouble it would cause would be absolute horrific it alreay is bad anouth without making it any worse.........they will have massive tunnels and big scary looking jaws........and just think we wound'nt be able to keep ants anymore thank god there not that big :!:

miszt we both have different views again is there anything we do agree on? lol :-k

thats what i think, one or two ants of that size would be no problem, just stamp on them, but a colony would be diffrent, think how fast they would move, and how much weight they could pick up,i dont think there would be many animals on the planet that could cope with an attack like that

or like this :D Hyperlinks sind nur für registrierte Nutzer sichtbar

But if ants would be that big (7-8cm), thay had to grow a lot slower, needed more territory for hunting etc. ... ... so there couldn't be that many in the same region. Also if there is a new species, there's always something which is hunting it ... ... there would be a balance then. And with about 7cm they also maybe good food for our former ancestors ... .
I don't think anyone can predict what will happen ...

i agree it would be very scary indeed, espially with army ants on the rampage! but i guess in some conternants us humans would be safe from them as they wont be everywhere but near anouth so it would be very hard :-k

The evolution of insect in size is limited because they have a rigid esoskeleton. For this reason they grow with metamorphosis.

In Cenozoic, Formicum species queen had an opening haul of 15 millimeters. Probably workers - don't know - could kill small birds. Currently, the biggest ant is Dorylus (Anomma) wilverthi queen: it's lenght is over 6 mm.

there was a time about 100 million years ago called the carboniferous age where because of the huge quantities of oxygen in the atmosphere some insects such as an ancestor of the dragonfly where around a meter long  and some tarantulas were eating things the size of cats but because of oxygen levels dropping these species of giant insects died away, if this hadn't had happened then maybe insects like ants could have been very big.
