Questions on various ant farm products;

Hi,

Could you provide some more information about these products...

1: "Ytong Start Set" - what is this, what would you use it for, and how? There is no information for it :S

2: "Ant Island" (both of the different ones) - I'm not sure what this is, there isn't a description and it's hard to make out what it is for on the picture - could you describe/explain this please, and what it is for?

3: "Ant Box 10x10x20" - Is this a plain box with 2 * 10 mm holes in two sides? How secure/tight fitting is the lid once on?

4: "Formicarium Highland" - what are the dimensions of the "colony area" - the area where the ants could be (not the dimensions including the stands/legs). What exactly are the "3 removable side elements", and what are they used for? "Louvres" I think means "hole" - how big are these holes (10mm?). And what does it mean by "optional fine or greater grid"?

Hope that's not too many questions, but I would like full information on these! :)

Hello Azzer,

Some articles had been translated, others are but not uploaded and others had to do... I´m going to work for it!

But now to your questions:

1) gas-aerated concrete (Ytong) starter set This starter set include:
1x gas-aerated concrete (ytong) plate approx. 20 x 20 x 5 cm (its not allways possible to tail the concrete very accurate in this dimensions)
1x plexiglass plate 20 x 20 cm
1x silicone

You can use this as a nest alternative where you can watch the nest activities (similar like the ant farm). But the ants don´t dig you have to create channels and small rooms before.

2) Ant Island (both sizes)
This island is surrounded with a moat and included two ports with 10mm diameter. This practicable and low-maintenance arena suit for feeding- or trasharea. This could be also used as basin so small ant species.

3) Ant Box
This container included an antsafe sliding lid and two ports with 10 mm diameter. Its another alternative feeding- or trasharea and could be also used as basin for small ant species.

4) Formicarium Highland
The size of the "colony area" is 51 x 22,5 x 7,5. Sorry there had been a mistake: the are only two removable Sidelements the stands. The Louvres mean openning and have a diameter of nearly 4,5cm. They are closed with round air grills. To be sure that the ants can´t get through the grill you can choose between a fine (for small ants) or a rudely (for greater ants) mesh guard.

Thanks Bianca! One more question now :)

How easy/possible would it be to drill more 10mm holes in the sides of the various ant farms (such as the small "Ant Farm Standard" 250*240mm one)?

Do you know (could you ask the person/company that makes them for you?) if they will "crack" or anything if I used an electric drill with a 10mm bit in them, to make further holes on each side for multiple farms to be connected to make a "large complex"?

Hello Azzer,

use a drill bit (10 mm diameter) and drill very very slow through the plastic. Be very carefull because there could be the possibility that the plastic crack when you use to much power. Take a look that you not drill more than the thickness of the plastic, because you don´t want to graze the other plastic sides.

Thats the information I get, but I think you understand that I couldn´give you guarantee.
