What is the red/orange tack paper called used to cover up the formicariums to make it dark?

better take the black one to be sure ... there are ant species who are able too see red light.

In my experience only Lasius species see through the red folio. But i also use black folio on all of my farms. Just to make sure.

Another addon: make sure you completely cover all gaps. Thats tricky at least in the "entry", i always pile up some substrate and cover it myself, and let the ants design their own entry.
As for the materials: i go with the black foil to shut out all light, drop it on the Tube, and cover all gaps at the sides with little substrate "walls". Takes some constructing to make sure all it lightproof AND removable;) But light is definatly a big source of stress. Animals living in complete darkness for the most part of theire lives are very sensible to light.
