no sir, they can become quite tame, unlike tarantulas that can bite, these really will not, they will even eat whilst sat on yuor hand and you offer them a bug...

once you have a set up, no real cost, they eat all moving bugs....so you can catch them, but usually crickets, some need a heat sorce, other than that very cheap to keep...

This of course realy depends on the species, you are absolutly correct if you are just reffering to the violin mantid as this is a sit-and-wait species and is not agressive to large things (Ghost mantid is like this as well). But some species will attack your finger if you wagg it in front of them or upset them. This Chinese mantid I recently bought will try to eat anything of me that comes within 3" of it .
Many species of beginner tarantula can become tame and won't bite, as long as you remember to feet it.

 the idea that a tarantula will try to eat you i find rather amusing,
tarantula dont bite cause you forget to feed them, neither will a mantidd, they will howerver defend themselves when threatend, which is a whole different matter

Well, I agree with that, but some times being hungry does make them more agressive. My chinese mantid looked pretty thin when I got it and as soon as I let it out it ran to my hand (holding the lid) and actually grabbed my finger and started nibleing it. This may not be hunger but thirst, my phasmids (herbivors) have chewed my hand when realy thirsty.

anyone know if there is a way of telling if a ootheca is fertile, i have read that if you cut it open and see goo then its fertile, but i dont want to risk it. i just dont think mine is, its really light, a bit pale and i held a light up to it (like you do to a chicken egg) and it looked hollow.
please help
