I've got a 2ft fish tank I wish to make into an ant farm, I'm on a limited budget, being 15 and all.. I have about £20 to spend.

Do you have any tips for me?

id silicon inside edges n corners again and run ptfe on top and for roof buy some standard glass cut to size with ant proof meshin middle for air. prob get glass cut for few quid

It's water tight, it's got water in it at the moment.

I was thinking something like... Bit of perspex over the top, covering say... 2/3 all taped up and sealed so they can't escape. Then for the 1/3 that's exposed having a cloth, so I can lift and feed them. The tank is made out of acrylic, by the way.

Also, quick question about when I but the ants, I'm going to be buying the lasius niger(SP?) ones, if I buy 20-30 ants with a queen, will that be enough to get the nest started?

You can even have a queen with 5 workers to start a nest XD


But make sure you have everything ready for them! You don´t need to be hury. Read a bit how you should take care of them. When you have already done that. GO! XD

well tbh u can keep Lasius niger in a test tube for up to a year easily... As for the cloth not such a great idea.. use some PTFE and you should be ok.. and as for the Perspex i tried that idea and mine started bending leaving gaps the ants could escape under. BTW... Hello and to the forum

yeh id seriously measure it and get a glass piece cut for it to sit on top with hole cut in middle its so cheap saves lot of hastle
