First, that nest will be ok to start with, but they will quickly outgrow it. You don't need to put any sand in it.

Second, to change your language preference, go to the control panel. Just below where it says Portal>board index>English forum> questions for beginners - there is a small user icon - the link next to it is the user control panel. Click on that. Once there, the third tab is board preferences. There you can change your default language.

The farm you a referring to is way to small, you can use it for the first 6 months or so. Don't forget it is a gypsum farm and these ants can dig through it.

I think it is best that you read a bit more about these ants before considering to buy them.

Hello Jcrusader
Don´t move small colony to set- up like´s this. You mustwait first, till they will grow up to 40 workers... If you will full entraces to other chambers in this nest, you can move them to this nest, their pheromones will be OK, so they won´t be scaried of bigger space... When they will grow up, they will maybe need more space and they will ,,open" new chambers..... I put my 100 barbarus colony to ytong- 3x3cm- parametre of chambers, and there was 6 chambers together.. But they was also scared and ytong was too big for them!

J, If your gonna keep Messors.. why dont you just make yourself a setup instead of buying one?? Ive got mine in a ytong atm and im sure as long as you keep and eye on them.. and make sure they have plenty of room to expand they will not chew through it.. Mine certainly have not. Also to make a ytong setup its gonna cost you less than £20!!!

I stand by my point, i think you know to little to already start with this species. Messor species need there nest area half moist and half dry. (moist for the larvae, dry for the seeds) The cork nest you are referring to are not good for it. Also they need a dark nest area, queens are very sensitive to stress so they don't like light in the nest.
And like Steve said, it is very easy to make a farm yourself.

Actually it is very easy to make half-moist cork nest, you need only water it from one side. I use cork nests for most of my colonies and they all have both moist and totally dry parts. I didn't have Messor, but most ants like to have some dry place to put pupae there.
