Hi Franco,
Sorry for not having answered earlier :)

I've got the book and both versions are exactly the same. The only difference is the cheaper one was published buy Belknap and the expensive one by Springer. Apparently, the latest wants to earn more money with it  but they're the same page by page. Even the paper quality seems the same.

Hope that helps

No, journey to the ants is a far more basic book.

The Ants is a worthwhile investment if you are passionate about ants.

Exactly. As damondeionno says, The Ants is THE book about ants, it has everything you could possibly know about ants. On the other hand, Journey to the Ants was written for a broader audience, is much shorter and basic, and it doesn't have the huge amount of information the other one has at all.

Oh the reference book. Wilson's magnum opus. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times when I was a student. He would sit in the Yard watching groups of students getting together and going off on their separate ways, or, " gathering and dispersing", always jotting something down in his notebook. At the time I had no idea what he was up to. I don't think too many people did. He was always very gracious, "don't mind me, kids...". Yes it certainly is THE book about ants. No dispute there, fellows.

I really wanna get this book, and I will eventually. I saw Edward O. Wilson on Discovery Channel's ultimate Guide: Ants and loved how enthusiasticly he speaks about ants.

Actaully reminds me of myself whenever someone gets me talking about something that interests me alot.

I have Journey to the ants too, and I also enjoy it. I look at the big book in the public library and just note down what I need. It seems nobody goes to the library anymore. The place is empty all the time. I love it, it is as if it is my private library.

Yes, Journey to the Ants is still a great book, no question about that. It's only that The Ants is just... the ant heaven :D
Anyway, I'd definitely encourage anyone to ask their local library to bring it. And speaking about libraries, it's really hard to find anything about ants in them. Here in England, what you get is loads of books about birds, some books about mammals, the odd one about insects (with one or two pages dedicated to ants) and NOTHING about ants.
But hey, that probably makes it even more interesting, it's like being iniciated in an obscure science

I still have just three books about ants- Journey to the ants, and than two others- ,,Ants of Central and Southern europe" by B. Seifert(2007) and ,,Ant´s bionomy" by Dr. O. Obenberger(around 1940 years). I´ve read few texts in the book The Ants myself too, it´s big ant bible full of informations, determination keys, photos and so on, but I think people must have some more knownledge just how to keep ants right, if they want to read this book. For me was texts hard, but if I will make more ant preparations in the future, and also collections, this book will be very helpful

I've looked on every Amazon store with an English Section; DE, NL, UK, US, you name it. 99% of what's available are written for 8-12 year olds, then there's "Journey to the Ants", which does have a small, but very good section on ant keeping and specimen keeping in the appendix, and after that we jump straight into Entymology theses. Not that there is anything wrong with a lot of books for 8-12 year olds, don't get me wrong here, I am all for it, but I would really enjoy reading something in between "Molecular phylogeny of the insect order Hymenoptera: apocritan relationships", and "Emily the Ant and the Rainy Day". ...Emily is kind of cool, though...
That was quiye a rant, excuse me.
