Quick Question

Beitragvon Andrew » 9. Sep 2008 21:51

I have two questions that can deal with any type of ants. My first question is why my ants keep moving their entrance around and why they sometimes keep blocking it off? My other question is if ants can actually produce sound because i was looking in on my ants when i heard this squeeking/chirping sound coming from the container that house my ants in. This is my second time I heard it, the first time is when I put my newly captured queen with her workers inside the container.

I think Paraponera clavata can make sounds, they do if they feel harmed...

Small colonies block off their entrance to protect themselves from other ants. So that is pretty normal.

My Camponotus makes sound. When they are excited or irritated they tap on the baisn with their bodies but I've never heard a Messor make a sound. Maybe they are chewing on something and you can hear it.

Or maybe they walk in such a way it makes sound. I've heard my camponotus herculeanus making noise sometimes too :)

Well my colony is not that small it might have 30 to 50 workers. But lately i had a small ant infestion inside the jar where my ants are in, but i destroyed the colony where these tiny workers were coming from. Do queen ants make noise like queen bees?

They move the entrance from there nest to which they think is the best place. And like mpir said, sometimes they block it to feel save.

Ants can not make sounds (as for as i know) only with there body. Like mpir's Camponotus species mine do it to. They tick with there jaws (or head) on to the floor.
