Ok i would def recommend that you start with lasius niger and not formica. Lasius will grow into a lovely large colony and be active and aggressive which is great to watch. Also they are very easy to keep. Also you really dont need to go spending loads of money on starter sets if you dont want to. You could easily make a setup from things here in the UK. I keep most of my ants in self made ytong blocks which you can buy from Wicks for like 90p. Which i then have connected to a plastic fish tank that can be brought from most good pets shops for around a fiver... Job done and will last a fair few years. As for the crickets i buy them from ebay and keep them in a plastic tank with egg cartons. They are pretty easy to breed too and the net has plenty of info about this.
If i have convinced you to go for Lasius niger, i have new young colonys from this years flight and would happily send you one. Just send me a PM

Ohh and btw :sign_welcome: to the forum ;)

These ants are NOT the same.
Lasius niger is pretty agressive even small colonies, but fusca will be very shy before 100's. I like lasius niger more than fusca because L.Niger is agressive.

If the colony is small, yes they are. Most colonies are when they are small.
When the colony is bigger they are not any more. ;)
