My ant farms projects

This one was made with clay to model the chambesrs and I used a keyboard box as form.

This one was the same, but the idea, as you can see, was to keep the box. So there's the glass on top of the chambers and I kept the top of the plastic box. To have a pratical possibility of keep it dark. I'll paint the plastic top in black. But you can already buy a plastic box with the top no transparent.

Hello melk9 and welcome to the forum.

Looks like a really nice setup.
A few questions if you don't mind. ;)
What stuff did you used to make the nest area ? Is that plaster ? And how are you going to keep the nest moist.

What kind of ants are you going to keep in there ?
Consider making a bigger out world when the colony grows.

Good luck.

Hello Jimmy
Yes, it's plaster, but I forgot to say that I used a mixture of water and wood glue to make it good to keep the air moist, makin the surface of the chambers no-absorbent. In three days it was completely dried and smelless. Here where I live we almost breath water. But this camponotus specie I want to keep here, use to make nest inside eletric machines like DVD, tv, etc, so they really do not need moist at all. And about th size of the colony, in de side of the formicary there is a extra hole where I can conect a new set up, just like the first one.

Plaster nests are only good for species that dont require allot of moisture, so its good you choose your species carefully, plaster goes mouldy very quickly, the glue may help to prevent this a bit tho, as some contain anti-bactirial/fungal agents, however I wuldnt like to guess what affects those chemicals may have on the ants
