Last night my Lasius niger queen was running round like mad and weaving the cotton wool socked in water into a long thread. She was pulling bits of and rolling them into a long thread, Amazing!!!

Sadly she stop when i went to take a pic..

Ants can doe strange things, as long as the are fine there is nothing to worry about.

Ants in my M. barbarus colony are doing this all the time. They pull out the cotton and then they deposit it in arena. I don't know why they do it but I guess it keeps them occupied.

I have found out that the queen has used the thred to tie up all the lavae like a washing line! Strange!!

Yes that's usual. Some of my herculeanus queens have created a rope connecting both cotton ends of the tubes.
