Formica fusca: New colony in test tube.

Formica fusca: New colony in test tube.

Beitragvon Jeroen Iprenburg » 8. Jun 2008 15:04

I received two queens (Lasius niger/1q+10w and Formica
fusca/1q+4w) about four weeks ago from Antstore. The Lasius niger seem happy, are producing tons of brood and have spontaneously moved into a sand nest between two glass plates.

The Formica fusca seems less active and remain in the test tube. Have produced a few eggs. But do not forage outside the tube or seem to have touched the food. Are they nocturnal?? They seem very sensitive to disturbance and quite photo-phobic (unlike the Lasius niger)

Do they have enough food/moisture in the tube to survive? I worry that something is wrong and actually want them to move into a gypsum nest before the summer holidays start. What to do?

:sign_welcome:
Formica eat mainly insects. They also may take more time to propergate than Lasius Niger. Remember: Good things come to those who wait.

Hello Jeroen and welcome to the forum.

The Lasius niger nest is a bit bigger so they are more active. Also is this species much more aggressive. So it is normal you see them more often than the Formica fusca.

Does anyone know if you can give Fusca´s some sanguinea laravas so that they will accept them and take care of them, or will the kill them?

Like you see they accept it. But it could give problems when the worker hatch.
