Insect Traps (for food)

Beitragvon miszt » 20. Jul 2008 15:36

I made a few simple diagrams showing some of the ways I catch insects to feed my ants.

Remeber to either Freeze for 1hr or drop in Boiling water for 30 seconds before feeding any wild insects to your ant colony!

Would love to see other peoples designs, so show us your traps!

Hope those 3 will be useful :)

this is my trap.
it is a 12v cold cathode light (kinda like neon's) hooked up to a 12v scooter battery with a old light shade around it, for the insects to perch on, i made it an hour ago so i dont know how well it works yet.
ill tell you how well it works tomorrow

Im trying a version of the moth trap, basically a bucket with the top covered in foil with a light inside and a wide funnel inside, so when moths get in the foil reflects which makes it even more moth attractive. Just gotta hope it works :)

I find the best place to get freshly killed fly's is from the bumper of my car, or anyone's car, and also save washing them off aswell :D . but i have only small colnoy, so one a day is plenty. How do you know when you need to feed your ants more, do you just give them two fly's and see if they take it then keep giving them two from then on?

i'd worry about the pollution from car exhausts personally, pollution is doing allot of damage to the natrual world, I dont know what affect it might have on an ant colony, but there are sum pretty nasty chemicals in exhaust fumes.

Feed them as much as they will eat, if you see food being left to go bad, then you know they have enough and can reduce the amount :)

it may be that the funnel is not slippery enough, I use a teflon coated funnel which is very similar to putting ptfe as escape prevention, try the second trap with the stones and cover
