Hi all, quick question when putting the loam in (1kg red sand/loam from antstore) should i put all of it in dry and then water it? Or dampen it up first and then put it in the farm? Its for a Lasius Niger colony if it helps. Also the farm itself is quite thin so the loam will be about 20 cm deep.

first, you should make smt.of paper etc. where you can easily can drop the sand in it, but first drop something in it, where you can drop water in the farm . example: a halm!

OK cheers mate, well i've got a funnel and i've put some clay at the bottom and a straw like Miszts sheet says (well done mate that things aweome!) but all i need to know is if i should put the loam in dry (like straight outta the packet) or dampened with a little water?

you should put it dry in the farm, and then you can drop water to it. or with the halm.

Yea totally, i'm gonna take some photos of the farm i've built and of the queen i found and hopefully you guys may be able to help me out? 99.9 % sure the queen is Lasius Niger.

kool, look forward to seein em Lasius niger is a fairly easy one to spot around the UK, not had any flights yet my end, waitin patiently! lol

I personally think the males and queens havnt even hatched yet were i live as there is no sign at all of them and all colonies are not very active

Where I am there are males and queen ants in the nest of lasius niger colonies

Hehe i used to live in munic for a long time (atleast for me)
i think halm means straw in german
