Army Ants,Driver Ants and Other Ants

How come Army ants and driver ants only eat insects do they eat honey to keep them alive or have they managed to do something to the insects which gives the workers food? I mean like an ant like lasius niger they need honey or sugar water to survive the workers do so dont army ants and driver ants need honey ?

They will come across nectar and honey during the raids also they may eat fruit and insects full of suger such as other ants. They all they have to do is store the sugary substances they find in social stomacs.

Almost all species needs sweets but not all. Messor species don't need them. I don't know about driver ants.

But then messors and other harvesters get their carbs from the seeds they eat. I suppose army ants could eats seeds too, like Peidologeton do.

Dorylinae (driver/old world) and Ecitoninae (new world) both eat fruits, seeds n nuts aswell as insects

have heard of them eating fruits but never confirmend and on a side note has any one tried keeping driver ants - army ants? is it even possible?

hehe its impossible to keep driver ants or army ants as they must change nest every 1-2 weeks or so and there colonies contain millions for army ants and up to 20 million of driver ants you will need to be feeding the army ants 120000 insects a day or so and the driver ants 1.2million insects a day or so lol

well with an industral sized cricket farm and an area of about 1.2 square miles then its would be possible rotfl

Yes some species like fruits to. You can try it out yourself to see if you ants like it or not.

Yep, impossible to keep Army ants. ;)

for the first 6months that would probly be ok lol

Many Dorylinae are subterranian and its believed there are many species that we have not found yet because of this

I know about Dorylus colony in formicarium ... I have some videos from it , there male swarming with queen and videos how dorylus queens laying eggs etc.

and army ants? ... you can keep Polyergus :) , it is nice European army ants and now in June we have a lot of theirs hunting here

What you say about Polyergus you could say about many Formica, as these hunt in swarms and trails. The only real difference is that Polyergus need slaves to survive which would make Formica easier to keep. Although, they do look like bloody nice ants.
