Custom Ant Colony?

Beitragvon Azzer » 5. Apr 2004 23:40

Hi,

I have the "design concepts" for a custom ant colony I would love to have built, and in fact if you mass produced these I think *potentially* a lot of people might want them - but if not, then is it possible to pay some extra money and have a custom design built?

I have tried to explain all the specifications in a text document and a bitmap graphic, zipped it up and put it on my games website here:

If you could take a look, and tell me what you think/if it's possible?

I know it looks very complicated etc., but you probably could just have a glance at the drawings, which would give you a basic idea of what I think, and then make your own "exact specifications".

BTW - all the holes would be for lot's of "10 mm tubing", so people could connect any farm to any other farm easily, and extend it.

There should also probably be "Caps" that fit these holes, so you can "Cap" (close) some holes easily, until you want to extend the farm, then you remove the caps and add another colony section connected with tubing.

The 3 holes on each side would be so some "Tubing" was actually "under-ground" for the ants to extend the colony in to different sections, plus "over-ground" tubing which could connect to either the large "feeding areas" or whatever.

The idea is so that it is very solid, easy to access, automatically has air holes, and you can open smaller "lid sections" instead of the entire lid without worry bout escape, to drop food in/whatever.

The lids would all clip down firmly so there is no risk of seals breaking or lids being "loose".

So - is it possible? I would pay well to buy this setup :)

Hello Azzer!

Its a very detailed image and eyerybody can see that you had invest many time. I only had one/two thinks to say:

- the "hinged lid" seems a little bit to smal. Did you remember that you have to clean something in the ant farm, I´m not sure if its possible with that little top.

- three holes for conecting something. It could be possible that at the last hole could be leave some water if you swap to much.

I´m not sure but maby I´m wrong - maybe this few words could helped you!

I talked with Mr. Sebesta to produce your special designed ant farm for your own. We only do this in Germany not all over Europe, sorry for saying this to you!

Greetings
Bianca

P.S. Spend a few good days over Easter!!

Hi Bianca,

You are most likely right, I'm sure having far more experience in it than me - the design was just a concept/idea though.

The intention was that the *entire* lid could be removed - just like with your own ant farms on your site... but that this lid could be clipped down so it was firmer (I'm afraid I had some escape trouble with mine)... when you want to clean out the farm etc., you could undo the clips, and remove the entire lid, but most of the time you would leave this lid clipped/locked firmly down (and if clipped down, it would add to "support" the entire farm, holding the sides the same distant apart/together, like the small support struts do in your farms).

The smaller lid could then just be opened seperately "within" the full sized lid, simply for dropping small items of food in if desired, or dropping water in for moisture. When this "smaller lid" was closed, it would leave very small air holes - too small for escape, but big enough to provide fresh air to the colony at all times.

However, there was also the larger "feeding area" (similar to your new product - the "ant box" - but slightly larger, and with a 10mm hole in all 4 sides, and a clip-down lid, which had another smaller lid within it as described above for dropping food in without having to remove the entire lid), and so eventually you would only ever need to feed them in this area.

The reasons for the design are to support a larger, more complex colony (potentially as large as you want as you could keep purchasing the thinner "colony areas" and adding them with further tubing), with added security measures to reduce any chance of escape (as all lids would clip firmly down rather than just rest on the top providing reduced support and not being sealed on all 4 ages as securely).

Perhaps it could either provide some ideas for more "ant farm" products to sell on your site if anything? Maybe you could take one or two ideas from the design, such as clip down full-size lids, in-built "air supply", more 10mm holes both high up and low down to extend the colony size (some 10mm holes low down so that the ants can tunnel through them to extent their nest)?

I would certainly buy them :)

Hello Azzer!

Maybe your design could provide some ideas for an new "ant farm", but in time we have lots of other things to do. But I will thank you for your ideas.

Greetings
