The specie you mean called Myrmica rubra and is a good choise for beginners. That don´t mean that they are less interessting but more robust and easer to keep.
The antfarm will going well with this ants, you also need an foraging area, f.e. a container box, where you give the ants some food and an water ressource. To combine the farm with the container you need an tube 10mm diameter. To be sure that the ants don´t break out use put with the fingertip some vegetable oil on the edge of the foraging area.
For the antfarm you need 1x sand and 1x loam, mixe it and the substrat will be more solid. Get the substrat (f.e. sand) in the foraging area dry, so the ants will not settle in these container. A small bowl is good to give the ants some honeywater - please remove it all 2-3 days to prevent must. Also the ants like death insect to supply the need of proteine requirement.
Roughly the paket will arrive you 1 week after the ordering. Sure they will survive (we have often send some ants to the UK) - in eceptional case we will give you displacement.
When you get all, please don´t pour the ants to get in the antfarm. Just combine the test tube (where the ants will be in) with the antfarm - you will see soon they will settle in! If you pour the ants it would be possible that some ants get damage and you lost some brood. At the beginning you can use some cotton wool, drop the honeywater on it and put it directly in the antfarm. Later give them the food in the foraging area. To get the antfarm damp I recommend you to use a pipette.
O.k. now I write a lot of stuff, if you have more questions or if I forgot something, please let me know!
Greetings
Bianca
