i think ive only got lasius in my garden, but im gonna try the sugar water trick on a few lids and see what ants i can get ;)

i have myrmica species(about 3), formica species(4 including sanguenia),lasius species(maybe 3) in my garden and probably some other :) .

the lid trick is possible i have seen bright orange queens around the areas that i feed outdoor ants the closer to there nest opening the better

man you are lucky, i want a colony lol, i have seen a few workers around from this species so hopefully a new species in my garden.

Btw, the sugar trick may only work with colonies with multiple queens. For colonies with 1 queen may not take the chance of loosing there queen. Also if you take the queen of a colonie you risk destroying it, for they might not be able to repopulate.

i tried the lid trick today and alls i got were majors no queens and no workers strange but only majors

Im afraid even if a colony has a lot more queens than one I think there is no way they would still send them out its still risky even if they have a lot of queens they might not want to lose any of there queens

True.
I was just syaing from my own personal experiance, so others might not be so lucky.

Another way of finding ants is to wait till a hot day. Then turn over stones on top of a nest and a queen or two might be soaking up the rays 8). It sounds simple but it works.
