Ant's Eggs

Beitragvon niels17 » 6. Jan 2004 21:24

I've bought a colonie Lasius niger a few months ago. Now they are in my arctificial nest, but I still haven't seen some eggs from my queen... How long does it take to get some eggs? I need the ants for school, and I must finish the project before January 30th... What do I have to do to get the eggs?

I will translate one thread from the german forum (in a few minutes) where you can get some informations about the development from Lasius niger (I´ll open a new thread).

But now I have some questions to you:
You said that you need the ants or eggs? for school - please tell me more what you want to examine and which class you are. How many workers do you have at the moment?

Wich kind of nest do you have? And did the ants hibernate? Because during the hibernation the queen don´t lay eggs.

Hope that helped you

Hi Bianca,

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I'm 17 and in the last year of the gymnasium. After this, I'll go to a university or something. But before that, I've to make a project. It's for biology-class. This project is the most important for this year in fact.
I hoped to do a small research about the feromones, with a labyrinth. But for this, I need more ants. But I'm not sure whether or not this research will succeed. If not, I'll just observe the ant kolonie, and make soms notice from that.

November 29th last year I received the small kolonie. One queen, circa 8 workers. After this I put them in my arctificial nest... It's as big as shoe box (made of 'gypsum'), with 8 small chambers...

I didn't see whether or not the ants did a hibernate.. But now they are walking in the nest as well. The box is in our living room, with a temperature of circa 19-20 degrees Celcius.
But I did see some very small 'balls', it's like sand. Are that the eggs?

Thanks,Niels

Hello Niels!

I can´t look in your formicarium but I think, yes these are the eggs. But for you projekt I think it tooks to long till you´ll have more workers.

If you want you can make one of my tests, which I planted for school-classes. For this you only need 6 workers and some stuff (I think you can get from your school). If you have another idea what you want to present for your bio-class its o.k., if not just mail to us.

Greetings
Bianca
