Ok... I've read all the stuff...
My girlfriend loves Pheidole pallidula, so I think I'm going to buy them first!! ;D

Can you tell me if this order is appropriate/correct?

- Ameisenfarm Delux + "feets"
- Sand + Loam (I think that is "humuserde" in german...). How much of these things I need?
- The colony (obviously)

Now the questions...

- Do I need to buy something for the heating?
- Do the ants need a separate foraging area?

By the way, in the future I'll buy also a colony of Camponotus!! ;D

Hello Antman!

- Sand and loam is not "Humuserde" - the word I found for this is "humus soil" or "mould". For the Deluxe version you need 2x sand and 2x loam to mix them.

- yes you need a heating source: a heating or a heating radiation

- an seperate foraging area is necessary to gave them some more place and there you can give some food very easy.

- you also need some stuff to make sure that the ants can´t break out. Please take care of this point. Please use some oil (f.e. plant oil you use in the kitchen).

For an foraging area you can use this PVC-Box

or an simple aquarium (this article is to heavy so we don´t sell it but you can bye one in every pet shop next to you). For the beginning you don´t need a great one, so you can now buy a small and later a greater one. Or you can buy directly a greater one (I think its better and less expensive).

There are many possibilities for outbreak safety but not everything could be used for your ant specie - Pheidole have vigorous manibles and can bite the net away. We have an aluminium net, but the mashes are not small enough for your specie. So you only can use vegetable oil or talkum powder that you must remake time after time. If you want you can additionally put the foraging area in a (not high) basin with water (similar like "underpots" for the plants). So you will have two barriers: the oil and the ditch.

I know that I wrote a lot, let me know if you have some problems with the understanding of my "terrible" english )

How to put the oil on the edge:
Just dunk your fingertip in the oil to take a little bit of it. Then skim along the edge of the foraging area till you have a small stripe (don´t forget the corners). The stripe must be have a wide of a few cm (best way is double length of your ants or 2-3cm).

If you want to be sure that no oil strain away take something like a rubber grommet for doors and windows and stick it under the oil stripe. But you can also wipe off the oil which had strain away.

Connecting the foraging area with the nest:
Here you need some tools. If you have an plastic foraging area use an special top part for your drilling machine (now it gets a little bit difficult because I don´t know the correct english word for the top part, but I´ll try to explain it). These top part will be used to shape a round hole in wood or to make a hole for a socket (outlet). With this you can make a round hole in you PVC-Basin the same diameter of the flexible tube (for the Ameisenfarm Deluxe you need 10 mm). Position it nearly the ground of the basin so the ants don´t have to jump ;o)

About the shipping of the colony... Here in Italy is pretty cold in these days... From 5 to -3 °C... Must I wait for the spring or can I make the order in the next days?

All the time we speak over Pheidole pallidula I don´t looked into the stock of ants, and now I´ve had to say that we don´t have a colony or queen of this specie.

I´m very sorry, now I maked a link "stock of ants" (see on top questions general) to the german forum, where you can allways look how the actual state of affairs is.

I´ve talked with Martin and he couldn´t say how fast he will get some new ants, at the moment its a little bit difficult because of the low temperatures.

I think that P.S. (=post scriptum from Latin) is the same in english... I use it also in english... But after your question I'm not so sure!!!
