has anyone seen that when you buy a stater set with a basin in it the lid is to big for the basin tons of of my ants have been escaping into the house and it getting really anoying has any1 else had this problem if so do you know what 2 do

You should get urself sum Foam Tape so it fits better

I've not had a single escape since I put vaseline between the lid and the basin, it forms a sticky barrier and plugs the gaps.

i always use PTFE and Vaseline.. regardless of a lid.. ive no escapes since using this technique. If you dont want to fork out large postage for just a bottle of PTFE here.. there are places in the UK that sell it..

I just never use lids for basins. PTFE still hasn't let me down, as long is I look after it a little of course.

I won't be having any alates for while as my colonys are still small, but when I do and the alates fly,

I'm only using a lid for some small candy boxes, since i don't want to waste ptfe on such small things.. I wouldn't care if the alates tried to fly off other open boxes, i'll help them out of the house if they do. So far no alates anyway

As long as you collected all your species from your local area that is fine, but releasing species into an alien enviroment is illegal, for good reason, it can be extremly damaging to the local ecosystems

I always use a lid and PTFE. Believe me if your colonies get bigger it is a must.

Yes Kale, be ware whit that. Don't release species back in nature if they come from more than 10km from your home.

well then what do you do with your alates then? kill - sell - leave alone what?

I had a load of alites from a temnothorax colonie on the same day it was bought . i just let them fly off in to the wild (which i have read on another post that it could be very bad ).

Could ants from differant species (i.e Lasius niger drone mates with mates with a Lasius flavus queen) to create a new species?
