Hello staff,

I have a Myrmica rubra colony at current, do you/will you sell 1 queen which I could add to the existing colony or would they kill a new queen(I presume they would kill workers also?)?

How does the colony gain 2 queens? Does the 2nd have to originate from the same colony?

Also are you/will you sell any colony of other European species with 2 queens in it for extra £'s?

hi Eperdeme, there is a chance they kill the new queen. it is a 50/50 change. (wouldn't that be a waist of money and queen ?)
Most of the time if a colony has two (or more) queens they are together from in the beginning.

As you know ants are very terriorial and would kill a foreign queen. However I read a book that suggested that if a colony loses its only queen it should readily accept a new fertile queen of the same species because they will be able to tell from her smell that she is fertile and they know they need a new queen.

hi eperdeme. The change that they kill a new qween is higher than 50%.
The colonies which have more Queens come together by beginning how JimmyVe said, or some joung Queens come back to the old colonie after the "mary-fly" !!

It is possible but in rare cases. In most species (cases) its not worth the risk.
