Maybe your queen hasn't seen a male :( . maybe a Boostet nest?
I think this becouse this is her first brood you see her laying and it's really early to make a major this early.
How old is the larvea?

Did the workers hatch when you had the nest?

Normally Messor Barbarus get majors after they pass a population of 100 workers.

The biggest ones, yes. But there are Media workers to. In Messor colonies you have all kind of workers (size) So it could be possible it is a Media.

I can't really see the large larva, or it's really big ;) . Guess it's the second option

@ ratgreen
How it's going with your large larva? did it hatch to a major?

My Messor Barbarus nest is doing good :D . 15 workers and a lot huge larva's.
I've also got a worker with a large/massive head and larger jaws than the other workers. The rest of her body has the same size as the other workers. It's verry nice to see the large worker walking inside of the nest :p .

I'm going to place a new outer world soon, atm it's just a plastic box. I'm also thinking of placing them into a sand nest (25Cm*25Cm*2Cm) at the sand nest thear is place for 8 test-tubes. The sand will be dry so the workers use it to store the seeds.

Okey :p looks nice (sharp picture)
Every time i watch inside of my Messor Barbarus nest i see workers hatching, looks like it take them much longer than Lasius Niger :p .
I hope my first major will hatch soon :p .
