I recieved a Lasius niger queen and 10+ workers on friday (3 days ago) and all was fine, there were were plenty of eggs etc... i opened the box to check them on friday and then put back into their box. Checked again on saturday and again. they were fine. Yesterday (sunday) i didn't check them all day and this morning (monday) i checked only to find an overturned abdomen of a queen with no legs (flattened, just exoskeleton) and nearby the decapatated head. All the workers are alive and the brood is doing fine. My question..... did the workers kill the queen? Did she die on her own and if so, why would the workers take off her head and legs?
I know that the temperature was not too high as i have raised 2 other lasius niger queens in the same room. Surely it can't be mould because they would all be affected.
I can only deduce that it was the bloody workers. I am annoyed beyond belief.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Tom

The queen probably just died. To weak or not healthy. They workers don't kill there own queen. They removed the head and legs to carry her out.
