Mmmmh fair enough, however I would still like to know how I would change the humidity, as it is the only way i'm going to ever learn, is it just a case of the moisture of the sand/loam in the basin affecting the air? or would you need some specialist equipment to effect the humidity?

Also any live food I would be giving to them would be maggots or something else I could easily get from the fishing tackle shop nearby so no live crickets for me , and I might as well try dried crickets it's not going to hurt anyone (unless of course my ants are allergic to them ) .

I've read the care sheet and i'm unsure I do not see anything about humidity apart from the bit saying

'Lasius Niger do not require any specific humidity levels, however the nest doest need to be kept damp.'

The rest of that section seems to refer to groud moisture, I'm unsure if you mean ground moisture when you say humidity (as that is all I can see there) but humidity is to do with the amount of water in the air.

you dont need any specific humidity in air for l. niger or m. barbarus, but you do need to keep nest moist. btw, there is a little tutorial how to make nest moist in the care sheet.
