Artificial nests in the garden!

Beitragvon SteveUK28 » 14. Apr 2008 18:17

Hiya guys,
I thought i would move this topic to the General Discussion area..
Basicaly has any1 got a artificial nest in their garden.. and does it work??
If you do what kind of nest is it?
Ive been thinking myself of makin a ytong nest.. and leaving it out in my garden in a wild area.. Do you think any ants would move in.. and if so which species.. Bearing in mind i live in a quiet town in South Wales which is fairly near the local forest.

Any other Suggestions.. Comments.. Ideas and Thoughs are more than welcome. :)

If ants have choice, they would choose always a dark place. Some artificial nests would be good, but only if they would be covered, which won't make sense.

Ive tried this I had a breeze block which is ytong and then drilled some chambers and that and put it in the ground so they can nest under it and then I might be able to get a colony out of it :) There has already been ants going under it ;)

Kiam thats an awesome idea... I wonder if it would be legal for me to do that.. but take the block up to the forest and see if some wood ants make a nest there.

its basicly like ants watching stone.maybe you can make a ytong, and on its surface put a heat reservior(like a rock or some building materials, like roofs made of material of apshalt(sorry if it doesnt make sense)).

this works better for larger colonies that are well setup, as long as the nest exit wont allow the queen out it will work fine, theres a few pics sumwhere of people who have large tanks in their houses and tubes going into the garden

In italy there's a man that feed ants for work, he sells crematogaster scutellaris for the impollination of olive trees.
He makes something like 60 kg of eggs every year, and has studied a box similar to the bee's box.
