Hello Missy and welcome.

If you are interested in keeping ants that is great, but please read a bit more about it before you buy them. It would be better for you and the ants. Thanks. ;)

(like mpir said, that care sheet is really helpful)

30£ seems a bit much for a Lasius niger colony tbh, you can get a colony that size from an early colony within a year if the conditions are right, and that'll cost you only 5-10£ :)

although you are getting a ytong-farm with it aswell, this can be made in an hour, and will cost you 90p for the block + maybe £2 for a piece of glass (from a cheap picture frame will do)

although if your not DIY minded, i guess its not a bad price :)

Wow you get the glass that cheap :O When I got mine for my ytong they charged me £7.00 maybe thats cuz they made the glass so you cannot cut yourself on it ?

It depends what you are using the glass for, if its simply a cover for a ytong, and you are sure it wont get knocked about, then you can get a cheap picture frame and take the glass out

a glass cutter only costs about 3-5£ to :)

obviuosly you dont want to use picture frame glass for anything that may get nocked or needs to take some weight

yes, certainly not diy minded and i dont mind the thought of someone else building a nest and saving me a year of waiting for £15.

Really unsure of the tub costs though, what size would i need? 25x15x15? or would that be the 'small' one the guy is offering for £10?

would they out grow this?

may have to rethink this... :?

you dont have to have an out world, I feed my lasius niger colony from test tubes, one for insects, one filled with honey water and bunged up with cotton wool, then attached to the pipe into their nest :)

an outworld just makes it more interesting and natrual

If the colony is still small you could only keep them in a tube, it is just much easier to feed them in a out world. But anything can do for a out world, even a plastic box. If the colony gets bigger it is better to give them a nice farm with a (big) out world.
