My DIY Formicarium

My DIY Formicarium

Beitragvon Wedge » 9. Mär 2008 09:53

Hiya,

it's great to find an Ant Forum that's active, and that isn't dominated by Mods!

Thought I'd say hi and share my Formicarium design with y'all.

It's not as pretty as I had hoped - hot glue does tend to get everywhere... but having my ants in an open plan basin, completely open in my lounge is fantastic!

You should ask me about the alates though...

Weclome to the forum :-)

Be careful using glue, they often contain nasty chemicals, and do not wear wel with damp... I learnt this the hard way a few years ago. I'd recomend only using aquarium safe silicon

Nice work tho :-)

Somthing important you need to consider is break out prevention for alates, many weaver ants are incestous, so its very important they cant escape, mayb sum kind of net box to go over the top

Hi there, thanks for the welcome.

The hot-glue is all external, my ants don't particularly come into contact with it.

I'm not sure what incestuous means with regards to ants, and there's no where for my alates to escape to - while my ants are open to my lounge, I'm just fortunate that, for the most part, my alates prefer to stay around their habitat, and rarely fly off - don't know why, I guess I'm just lucky!

Thanks for visiting,

ah, sorry, I'm not really '48' - I just seemed forced to put some 'age' down when I registered. I'm not a fan of personal info on the Net...
