New start with Camponotus ligniperda

New start with Camponotus ligniperda

Beitragvon ashhad1 » 26. Feb 2008 18:42

HI all,
I did have a other colony of Camponotus ligniperda but disasters happened when they first came I just barely made them survive, but wen they all calmed down and let them go into hibernation and bring them out again around begin of feb everything was fine. I was on holiday over half term and did leave everthing prepared for my ants but when I came back my queen was dead...
I dont know how or why but all workers were alive.
But im guessing the queen had to much stress from the disaster before which made a toll back at her.

Anyway aas I do love this species and do know how to keep them now I started fresh and orderd my new C.Ligniperda colony on saturday. I orderd the cheapest one along wih a rose von Jericho. Il keep you all updated when they arrive.

Oh and I was just wondering because I did read somewere that C.Ligniperda could have 2 queens, C.Herc can also do this but I read this somewere else. Not sure though if this is true so any experience in this would be greate if someone would post it here.

With these species it is possible sometimes, but only in very large nests. It is called oligogyny - every queen lives in her own "district" of the nest, and while all workers act as sisters, queens are agressive to each other if they leave their district by accident. The number of queens of such colonies is 2 to 5. But most colonies have only one queen.

Thanks for posts u 2
Anyway my queen arrived today with no workers and only 2 or 3 small larvae, i guess she ate most of her brood on the way as shes not accepting the honey i gave her when she arrived.
The postmans knocking on the door and I knew she was here but i quickly looked through the little glass hole thing and i saw him shaking the whole box around!!! was only small and very light but still....
I put her in an ice tub with honey in the test tube (1 drop) and piece of bananna in the feeding dish.

The larve are like stuck to a piece of wool which was just lying about in the test tube wen she came so I hope she gets to remove them.

Anyway some pics for you all wen she came and in her little outworld

The queens actually don't need to be fed, but if you want to give her some food to boost, protein food is what she needs now. No wonder she is not interested in honey or fruit, but she may accept dead small fly.

Il think about it but I heard from one of my mates that the pet shops gonna be open again with new stuff. So if they have more reptiles and insects then before then it would be ace.
I checked thismorning on my queen before school and she seems to have settled down just fine, all the larvae are removed from the wool into a nice pile and she drank all the honey I gave her. No evidence that she touched the bannana outside the tube and I dont know if she left the tube yet but theres always some earthe at the entrance could be her or me when I take the tub down to look in.
So long story short
My queens settled down and she fine hope she lays eggs soon

Btw I rememberd that I still have some workers alive form the old nest were the queen is dead do you thinks its possible that I could make them adopt this queen? And if the queen or worker dont like it can the queen kill the worker?
I dont want the queen to die at all (money reasons and just want her alive lol)
I thought that I would add one worker at a time

So anyone think it would work?
