Red water

Beitragvon MilitANT » 8. Jan 2008 21:36

My ants just moved into a new test tube that is cleaner than their last... or so I thought. The cotton plug that holds back their water in the test tube is turning a reddish/pinkish color. I think I red somewhere that red color is a kind of mold. Is that true?

 I hope not. I'm afraid to move them again

I must say, i never had cotton turned red... If it is mold it better to give them a new tube so they can move if they like.
Which species are we talking about ? And do you have them in a tube in an out world ore connected to an out world.
Are the ants having trouble with the red cotton ?

There is no trouble (yet). The ants are doing fine but I just don't know why the cotton plug is turning red and I don't know for sure if it's mold or not. It could be rust.

I won't take any chances. I am designing a y-tong nest now. :)

I never mentioned forcing them. I would never force them unless absolutely necessary. They moved into this new test tube because the old one was filthy. I would connect this test tube to the y-tong so they could move on their own.

1. I think the rust is in the water, not in the glass.

2. Tetramorium

3. Insects (roachs and crickets) and sugar. Some times bits of other food like chicken and ham.

4. Chill, please. I do not have a digital camera to take pictures.

Okay i think i know the problem. (not sure) If you feed them insects and the drag them back into the tube it could be that the blood of the insects is on the cotton so it turns into red.
Is that a option ? ore don't they drag the insects in the tube ?
