Partenogenesis

Beitragvon Sphecomyrmex » 20. Dez 2007 16:18

Hi all,
I should to get some info on ant's partenogenesis reproduction.
I know there are three forms of partenogenesis, every of which origin males, females or males and females.
But i've a question: with the partenogenesis, the samples are born from eggs that isn't fertilized, and therefore they should be all aplontis, and therefore males...how is possible that, in some cases, with partenogenesis are also originated diplontis samples, this females?

Thank for all replyes :)

Yes, it is possible. Some bees and ants practice unique form of parthenogenesis known as thelytoky. This is a fusion of two cells produced in meiosis, so the effect is diploid (which means - female). It's a bit like self-fertilization.
