hi people of the antstore forum.

im thinking of getting a colony of Lasius* emarginatus. could sombody prefferebly with expirence of these ants help me please as they look quite a nice species to keep. and i could'nt really find much info on them

1:what is this species like in captivity, in terms of aggresive/non aggresive etc

2: what would u say the colony numbers would normally be in a mature colony

3: what is brood devolopment like, fast/slow or what

4: are they ok to keep in an ant farm

5:or is this species quite the same as lasuis niger in behavier side of things



if any one could get any pics of this species, it would be great so if u got a pic of a colony or somthink i would be very gratefull for some
pictures

please help if u can, with info and pics like i said i would be extremly gratefull!!! thank u in advance to future contrbuters

They will live happily in a farm, afraid I dont know anymore than that, they are European, and they like to farm Aphids

If you can get a colony of Aphids going on a miniture rose bush, you should see some nice activity, this is fairly easy to do, although not in winter, just remeber to put plenty of gravel on top of the soil so they wont nest in it, you need at least 1inch/2.5cm, and may also be worth putting some around the base of the pot about the same thickness, otherwise they may get in at the bottom

I'm not sure how big these ants are, but you will probly need a layer of Loam underneath the gravel aswell, a mix of 90/10 loam/sand should make it hard enough

thanks miszt, but where would i get aphids and this minature rose bush? an online shop or somthing,as in spring/summer i never see any aphids in my garden so i wont be able to get them there. and with the rose bush do u think i could get one at BMQ or homebase or somthink like dat? and how should it look like? sorry if last one seems a bit of a stupid question lol

yeah you can buy miniture rose bushes all over hte place, even supermarkets sell them

goto a local park that has rose bushes and you are sure to find aphids, am sure u'll find some in your garden to, but u may have to hunt around, they are there espcially when the young flowers are growing, before they bloom, they will congregate around the flower heads

sorry miszt,but what sort of time of year/month do that seem to be round the most?as its better to know really,otherwise it limits your chances of seeing them and capturing them even more less likely. so if u could help me with this that would be great thanks again miszt

summer time, depends on the species of Rose they bloom from Spring (April) until Autum (August-Sept)

You probly dont need to go and look for them, put the miniture rose outside in April, and make sure no one disturbs it, and u'll have plenty within a few weeks

I should to make another nest in spring for my lasius niger, therefore I take advantage to also change the forage area putting us the rose bush of it. A suggestion on as to systematize it?

look at that link looks like an online french ant shop. only if that site was in english though i know bout 'babel fish' by the way but that dosent help really as its a bit dogey. fault ill just let u know . hey if u know french it might be usefull anyway hang on u can change to 4 different languages i mght order a colony of lasuis emargitnus from here when i find anouth INFO on them u can order your ants from america sounds good for u.s people on da forum. hmmm i hope it is not a con site.....dont know though wish there was a way of finding out seems to have a forum on there it must be an ok site does any one else know bout this site?its got videos of ants and that and u can order big conoys and intresting set-ups and that

"These ant loves warmth and aridity; it avoids damp places. They nest builds them mostly in old wood, but also in cliff biotopes, there preferred in cliff scratches and hollow cavities. One meets it frequently in wall columns in house walls and often in the framework of houses.
From all Lasius kinds(ways) this is the fastest, possesses the best optical orientation and recruits most quickly"

Longevity of the 20-year-old queen and + Longevity of the workers to is 3 years old.
Size(Cutting) of the queen: 9 mm / Cuts workers from 4 to 5,5 mm.
Sort monogyne (a single queen by colony(summer camp)).

It's in german ... but to sum up, the Shop is a good one. He bought some ants, they weren't that lively, he recommends to wait for spring. But maybe the 5 day shipping was just a little to much for the small ones.
The special formicariums where quite nice, but he had to use a little Sandpaper to smooth the angles

oh thanks, so far im quite intrested in this species so i will probaly buy them!!! but like u say its best to wait to spring to start things. so i will/might wait a while if i do decide to get 'lasuis emargnatus' which i probaly will get them s.a.p. sandpaper wont be a prob cos ill just use my dad's

Hiya guys..
I've been thinking about what miszt said with the rose and the aphids... Would it work if u planted a rose in a basin of compost... and then had some very hard substrate on top.. obviously so the ants dont nest in the basin.. just a daft q.. what would use that is hard enough for them not to try n nest in???
Also would i layer of vasline around the edges of the basin keep the ants in.. Basin i was thinking about is: http://www.antstore.net/shop/product_in ... ass-2.html
