im sorry guys i dont care how good a book is i still will not ever pay £100 for a book.. at the end of the day its paper and ink.. I think £30 is the most i would EVER pay on a book.. I do believe tho that there should be a book printed for the ant keeper.. what to feed.. what not to feed.. species.. nests.. Tips.. From begineer level right up to genius.. Now if there was a book like that.. I MIGHT consider paying over £30.. But still not £100 ;)

I'm not going to stick up for a particular book. As I said, I think it's sad when people talk as though books aren't valuable. I've travelled to many parts of the world, and even in places where people are poorly educated books are often their most treasured possessions. The reality is that the knowledge you get from books can enable you to earn far more than the cost of the book itself - that's why people invest in education. To say, 'no way would I ever spend x on a book' is a bit silly IMO - most likely with that sort of attitude you will be much less likely to have £100 spare on a routine basis. Sorry if that's harsh.

Damond.... IF the book was to educate mate to progress further career wise to bring in more books.. or for acedmic reasons then YES i would pay more.. prob whateva it cost.. But seeing as keeping ants is a hobby nothing more then £100 is like a tad steep... But if ur willing to pay £100 for a book for ur hobby.. carry on bud.. and send me the photocopys yeh ;) LOL

I think it depends how passionate you are about Ants, for me, its an obsession lol whenever I get the oppertunity to sit down with 'The Ants', no one will get a word out of me for hours on end!

:D

I'm sure it can be got second hand for less, I've been looking for a while, but not had any luck, but i'm also saving my pennies for the full version, coz it is THE book on ants to have if ur really really love them.....

damondeionno hat geschrieben:If you go into an academic bookshop you will see lots of books in this price range. The reason is that they are published on very small print runs for a specialised audience, but they take a lot of resources to collect all the data.

Thats what im talking about. I read normal books, history books and stuff like that. And the cost around maybe 20 up to 40 €. I dont talk about studying. These books are expensive, thats for sure. But im not a student and i dont wanna study ants. So i dont wont buy me an book with this price.
And i believe you that there are many interesting things, but im sure that the book is hard to read/understand.....
And thats the reason why i only would buy cheaper books.

That's cool Antdude. I didn't have that kind of money when I was 13 either. You seem like an intelligent guy, so I'm sure if you work hard you will have no problem getting your own house and as many books as you like.

If you are really into ants... then "the Ants" is your Bible. It´s a hudge book, big format, very thick... it weighs about 3-5 kg. Very nice reading and if some chapters are "too scientific" you can always skip them. I borowed it from a friend and return date is way over due. :?

I did a bit of research on this book, it seems to have a TON of really detailed and specific info -very nice! I found the book online for $108, thats cheaper than the average academic book here (Ive had to spend well over twice as much on some books for school...)

One of the major reasons text books are so expensive is because the authors usually only make money for the first or second year the book is released. After being released for a year or two, the majority of sales are from used copies (which the authors don't make any money on), so they raise the price of text books in order to turn a profit in a shorter period of time. You can probably imagine how much work and specialized knowledge goes into making these books. The authors have to get paid somehow and if the money wasn't there, I'm sure they could make good money elsewhere :)
