We've already hit -6 in some parts of the UK, due to El Nino which affects weather all over the world, experts are predicting a very cold winter this year, so anyone hibernating there ant colonies outside, make sure they are rapped in bubble rap, otherwise they may not wake up becuase of the freezing temps!

Even in london we hit -1, which is very unusual!

In deed, if the temperature is below 0°c it could harm the ants if they are not underground. In nature they are deep underground so they can survive this temperatures but if you keep them in a y-tong ore something and you put them outside it could kill them.

ok miszt as you know mine are still in there test tube and wrapped in bubble wrap in my shed.. do u think they will be ok.. or should i put them in a draw inside my shed just to be safe lol

cant hurt to keep them in a draw remeber to keep an eye on the temp, but a draw + bubble rap shuldnt get frost

dont think we have ever had frost in the shed anyways.. got the freezer out there so it would prob shut down if the temp ever went to low.. Anyway.. in a draw it is..

i place all my colonies in my garden shed and place a few blankets over them its worked for me for the last few years so this should protect them.
i have heard england is meant to get a lot of snow as well.

luckily my ants will be inside my home this winter i hope we get some snow, last year we did'nt get any over where i live if we do get any ill be lobbing snowballs at windows and sh*t.......and having snowball fights lol. good fun is snow

ur going to hibernate ur colony indoors? i assume u mean in the fridge or somthing...coz anything above 10C and they wont hibernate...

yes, but only two of my colony's im hibernating this year(my smallest/youngest rubra colony and my phiodole pallidule) my biggest/older rubra colony will not be hibernating, as there is not anouth room for them in my fridge being i live with my parents and all lol. i am aware this can shorten the queens life expextency etc but hopefully next year ill have a shed in my back garden so i can put my colony's into their so they will probaly be hibernating next year and not this year instead:thumright:

Thanks for the heads up on the weather tho.. much appreciated. Checked my ants this morning and they all seem to be asleep type thing.. not very active at all.. Do they actually sleep then ?? or just snooze type thing ??

ants dont have any way of warming themselves up, so when the tempreture drops, the enzymes in there bodies cant function, its more like a cold-induced coma really, they simply cant do anything
