very true! if you spend your life trying to be someone your not, just because you want to be liked, you'll find yourself very lonely eventually ;) even when surounded by lots of people

but i think this discussion is a bit deep for an ant forum lol

damond....
i know theres already someone harder! i dont tell 'people'/just the forum to give my reason why i dont tell loads of people i collect/intrested in ants. i will let more people know about one of my hoby's(ants) but like u say its better when your older to tell more people that is wot i will do anyway! its only one thing (ants) i dont tell them about this 1 thing because as i said before i dont wanna be known as some sort of geek, do
i!

i appricate your help/concern, but u have to put your self in my shoes. i wanna try and get girls not creep them out by saying i keep ants, that would really freak them out etc!..............by the way i have anouth of my mom, dad, grandparents and my teachers in the skool lecturing me without u doing it aswell :x

ill take that on board damon, just please dont lecture me it proper p*sses me off :!:

Hello to all :)

I have kept ants since i was 13 , My first colony was lasius niger , caught a queen after the mating flight and keept her in a small test tube in my draw , she managed to raise her first workers just before my mom found her and told me to put them outside . Always been interested in ants , and think there are way amazing . Im always happy to tell people about my hobby and its always an interesting subject. I always find that when people find out i keep them, they ask so many questions and show a big interest .

Be proud about ants there worth being proud about .

Greetings

Adam :D

Antdude - nobody is having a go or lecturing. This is a friendly forum.

btw. I guessed you'd want to impress girls. We all did, and I imagine that most of us still do. There are lots of clues in the poem. Hope it helps.

My little contribution to this topic: For as long as I can remember I was fascinated with ants. I´ve never destroied an anthill like lots of my friends. I wanted to keep them but I never knew how and if it is possible at all. I wanted to study biology but I changed my mind as I never liked chemestry. Anyway few years ago I found a new friend over the internet who was also intrested in ants and he gave me my first colony of L. niger. I was just crazy about them. Checking them all the time, observing what they do and how they forage. I was addicted right away. Now I have 6 colonies and hopefully will have some more next year.

@ant dude
I guess I understand you in a way. You are in that age when self-oppinion is based on oppinion of others. I guess we were all in your shooes once just that we are over that now. You talk about rep like you are the king of the world and all eyes are on you lol. Anyway, with years it doesn´t get any easier. People will tell you:"Aren´t you a bit grown up to be playing with this things?" Thanks God I can say I´m in age where I give a rats ass about what other say. :)

You completly misunderstood me... but that doesn´t matter. I didn´t expect you to understand me anyway. And what you wrote... it´s just completly off... but that doesn´t matter too. We all know that you are young and I don´t mean that as an insult. One day you´ll see that "geeks" as you call them drive Ferraries and mingle with top models and high school hotshots work 9-5 and drive Polo. :P

It's like Jesus said - 'the geek shall inherit the earth'...

I think this all comes down to a slight difference in the use of the word geek. Some people use it to refer to people who are not connected to the real world. And others use it to refer to people who have particular specialist knowledge or who get good grades.

What about Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Richard Branson? Geeks? Cool? Both?

Basically variety is the spice of life. Most people I meet (not online) have never talked to anyone who knows as much as I do about ants, but then I'm interested in a lot of other things too (current affairs, classical literature, biology, evolutionary theory, football, community action, pool and snooker, hockey, the internet etc, computer games, political theory, philosophy, religions, fishkeeping, gardening, cooking, economics.), I score a lot of goals at the weekend (even now at 30!), I also have an active social life, and when I want to I can turn it on with the ladies (there is less demand for that these days - being attached and all) - I even work in the supposedly 'cool' marketing industry and I have my own company.

Having said all that, I'm definitely a lot of a geek, in that within my specialist areas my knowledge is fairly technical. Would someone who met me in the pub know that if I didn't tell them? Probably not. I'd rather be able to play both roles, when necessary, than be limited to one.

I know this is off-topic, but so what? It's a forum for discussion.
